What To Like
In talking with Paul Lang we learned the Spartans were on him before anyone really knew they were. He didn't go out and really get a lot of press and even having an offer prior to camp he made the trip and worked out for the Spartans staff.
Good frame with solid athletic skill that comes from an area that is known for putting out tough football players. Lang impressed the Spartan coaches with his high school workout during the evaluation process and earned his offer and then placed himself on solid ground with his camp performance.
One thing I've learned watching Mark Dantonio and his staff recruit over the years is the small things they look for in a prospect. Lang is a basketball player with a football skill set and body much like some of the other tight ends Dantonio and staff have recruited over the years at Cincinnati and MSU.
What May Concern You
Lang has good height but at this time is listed at only 220-pounds so there is some work to do in the weight room. With another year of high school and a year in a college weight program we fully expect he'll be ready after a redshirt year in college. How under the radar was Lang? While he has several schools in the hunt he really wasn't talked about by most in the business. The same can be said about another Dantonio recruit he had in Cincinnati named Connor Barwin who became a second round pick by the Houston Texans in the 2009 NFL Draft.
From watching Lang in action during his camp at MSU, Spartan Digest feels the skill set shown by Lang will allow him to be a player to take his game to the college level and excel. Tough and capable of making a catch and stretching the field from the tight end position is a must at MSU and Lang will be fully capable of doing all of it when called upon.
