Durrell Summers saved his best performance for a fiesty Northwestern Wildcats team that came in looking for a fight and a spot in the NCAA tournament.

Summers 24 points and 10 rebounds led the Spartans to a close than it was 79-70 win over the Wildcats. Summers broke open a close game with a monster dunk that started an MSU 18-2 run and brought the MSU players and bench into a near frenzy.

Even MSU head coach Tom Izzo felt the momentum swing that Summer's monster jam brought to the team and said he had a feeling even in warmups that it was going to be his night.

"Durrell was dynamite," said Izzo. "We started him off with a play we saw in scouting," Izzo said. "We thought it would get him going."

And Summers wasn't alone, he could only admire as fellow starting guard Chris Allen posterized the entire Northwestern squad when he was left alone on a MSU fast break.

Guard Kalin Lucas, who scored 23 points and had four assist found Allen who soared in from the left wing and slammed home a "Doctor-J" like dunk that brought the MSU faithful screaming in appreciation.

That was the highlight of Allen's night as he scored just six but also dished out four assists.

The play of Summers and Lucas off set a monster night by Wildcats forward John Shurna who pumped in a game-high 31 points in a solid individual performance that kept Northwestern closer than they should have been and drew them to within seven in the waining minutes of the contest.

MSU free throws by Summers and Lucas put the game on ice. Northwestern came into the contest with a surprising 14-6 record and despite being just 3-6 in conference play, have the easier part of their schedule coming up and a real shot at getting into the big dance.

For MSU, now comes the tough part of the schedule. They must travel to Wisconsin and Illinois for back-to-back games against teams tied for second place and who want to close the gap between the 9-0 Spartans and their squads who both post 6-3 conference records.
