In Demand P Sadler Still Looking Hard At MSU

Grand Rapids Forest Hills punter Mike Sadler's rise up the recruiting ranks has been one of the biggest surprises of the 2009 recruiting season, it surprised even him. "Honestly, I had no idea this was in store. I didn't even start punting until last summer.... It's just all been really surreal and I'm feeling very fortunate." -- Mike Sadler

Grand Rapids Forest Hills punter Mike Sadler's meteoric rise up the charts of the nation's top prep school kickers has been one of the biggest surprises of the summer recruiting season.

Heck, Sadler's rose so fast that it surprised even him. "Honestly, I had no idea this was in store. I didn't even start punting until last summer. I think deep down inside I thought I was good enough, but I never thought that it would actually happen. It's just all been really surreal and I'm feeling very fortunate."

"It's been very busy to say the least. I've been everywhere around the country just seeing colleges," he said.

"I've been to every school that has offered me, LSU, Alabama, the Air Force Academy, I'm going to Arizona State on Wednesday and a few other kicking camps. I've really been everywhere."

Despite having seven offers and turning down overatures that could have led to several more, Sadler says, the interest in him is still intensifying.

"Absolutely. The way recruiting works, when one school offers you, then any other school who needs a punter starts looking at you. It's been crazy, you'll get a call from a head coach, who I didn't even know was taking a punter," Sadler said.

So with seven in his hip pocket, who could be next?

"Michigan hasn't offered yet, they're waiting for the whole Will Hagerup situation to resolve out and if Will doesn't go there, I'm sure I'll be the person that they'll call. Florida has also shown interest and a bunch of other schools that have shown interest but if I'm not interested I'll just tell them to save both their time and mine," he said.

Eventually, he'll have to wade through all the interest and make a decision, does he have a timetable?

"I don't have a specific date set out but I'm hoping to (do it) before the beginning of the high school season. So hopefully within a month or so, I've seen the campus enough to really have enough information to take (my list) down to where I feel comfortable. I'll have no problem pulling the trigger early," said Sadler.

The big-legged kicker said he has recently been in touch with former Spartan great Greg Montgomery and that they're trying to put together a timetable to meet up and work on some of the finer points of punting and kicking the football, and he admits, he has a fond place in his heart for Michigan State.

"I don't have any direct ties (to MSU), but half of my school (graduates and) goes to Michigan State every year. A lot of my friends go there, so that helps with the social aspect of it. But I love the coaching staff at Michigan State. That offer certainly made it a whole lot more difficult from a decision standpoint."

After his visit to Arizona State, it looks as if Sadler will begin narrowing his list. GSN believes that Michigan State will make the early cut and be there right up until the end.

Will Mike Sadler eventually pull the trigger for Michigan State? Stay tuned to see.
