With Lakewood Park leading by nine with less than a minute remaining, Byrd sparked a furious rally by hitting back-to-back three pointer including one to send the game into overtime.
But Lakewood Park would not be rattled, going on an 8-0 run to take a commanding lead. Still Byrd led yet another comeback in the extra stanza, but this time falling just short of sending the game into overtime.
Byrd joins several other possible MSU recruits like Lansing Eastern's LaDontae Henton, Grand Ledge's Jon Horford, Saginaw's Tommy McCune and Warren Mott's C.J. Olaynian and Victor Sharpe on the sidelines.
Meanwhile, Pershing's great duo of guard Keith Appling and forward Derrick Nix roll on. Another commitment, Orchard Lake St. Mary's Dion Sims lead his team into the district final tomorrow against North Farmington.
But it might have been MSU commitment Garrick Sherman of Kenton, OH who had the best performance of the bunch. Sherman scored 10 points, grabbed 16 rebounds, blocked seven shots and dished off three assists to lead Kenton over Eastwood 47-33 to move on in the Ohio High School State Championship.
Sherman was named to the All-Ohio second team as a junior and already holds Kenton's all-time scoring record. Sherman and Kenton have a date tomorrow night against Gailon at Ashland University.
But in honor of Russell Byrd heroic effort for Blackhawk Christian, GSN's Sean Scherer invites you to watch highlights of one of Byrd's last games of his junior season.
