ScoutTV: Gauna, Greyhounds Conquer DeWitt

Alex Gauna is nothing if not a consistent producer. His double-double against DeWitt in a CAAC Gold matchup vaulted the Greyhounds to an overtime victory against a pesky opponent. GSN caught Gauna, a 2010 Michigan State prospect, in action and talked to him after the game.

EATON RAPIDS — The Eaton Rapids Greyhound outlasted the DeWitt Panthers Friday night, defeating them 52-47.

Alex Gauna, a junior from Eaton Rapids who is being recruited by Michigan State, led the way for the Greyhounds with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Gauna's presence on the court was missed when he got into early foul trouble, and the Panthers took advantage with an early run in the first quarter, building a double-digit lead.

When Gauna returned to the game, the Greyhounds whittled the lead to single digits going into halftime. After the game, Gauna talked about his coach's halftime dictation.

"We need to stay focused here and do what we got to do," Gauna recalled. "Don't play their style, play our style and that's what we did."

Gauna stayed out of foul trouble throughout the second half and led his team to victory in a thrilling overtime win.

It was the first victory for Eaton Rapids against DeWitt in over five years. "This is definitely a huge win for us, there is no going back for us right now," Gauna said. "This is what we dreamed of, playing a great team like DeWitt. Everybody knows they beat us — I think the last time we beat them was maybe five or six years ago. It's a great win for us, like I said, there is no moving back from here on out."

Gauna is being actively recruited, primarily from Big Ten schools along with other top programs. When asked where Michigan State stands in his recruitment he said, "They are probably in my top two I would say. I grew up a Michigan State fan. … They are very high, that's for sure."
