Michigan State, led by a breakout game from sophomore swingman Durrell Summers, upset the #5 Texas Longhorns in Houston 67-63 giving them a signature win prior to the beginning of conference play.
Summers wasn't the leading scorer or rebounder, but he made some key plays that turned out to be the difference in a close ball game.
None was bigger than his three pointer with just :18 left to give MSU a 65-63 lead. Kalin Lucas had a chance to salt the game away, but missed the front end of a one-and-one.
Texas rebounded and had a chance to tie or win the game but guard Justin Mason, who made just one shot from the field (ironically a three-pointer) missed from outside the arc and Summers, made two free throws to provide the final margin of victory.
The unsung hero of the game for MSU had to be guard Travis Walton, who's lights out defense on Texas guard A.J. Abrams - who came into the game as the team's leading scorer - made a huge difference in the outcome. Abrams scored only eight points on 3-of-10 shooting. He came into the contest averaging 20.8 points per game.
MSU was also buoyed by the return of forward Goran Suton. Suton was outstanding, going 7-of-8 from the field for 18 points with three rebounds and two steals.
