TRAVERSE CITY - Traverse City St. Francis advanced to the State Semi-Finals and closer to a date with Ford Field when they defeated Iron River West Iron County 35-12.
The Gladiators will face Ravenna at Ferris State in Big Rapids, MI this saturday with the winner getting a date at Ford Field in two weeks in the State Championship.
It was the defense that keyed the win by St. Francis as linebacker (#32) Grant Robb returned a fumble 46-yards for a Gladiators touchdown. That was just four plays after Ryan Farley scored on a 55-yd touchdown pass on St. Francis' opening possession to give the Blue-and-Gold a 14-0 lead.
Farley added a one-yard plunge to put the Gladiators up 21-0 at the half. B.J. Scalcucci put the Wykons on the board with a one-yard touchdown run to make it 21-6 but Farley scored his third touchdown of the game on a 38-yard interception to give Traverse City an insurmountable 28-6 lead.
Max Bullough pounded it in from three yards out to give St. Francis a 35-6 lead before Eric Stafford scored for Iron River on a 48-yd touchdown pass to end the scoring at 35-12.
"We set our goals high, what we're looking for is the State Championship," said St. Francis coach Greg Vaughan. "Anything less is probably going to be a disappointment for better or for worse. We tell our boys, set your goals high, set the level high and try to reach it as best as you can."
