LIBRARY, PA - While rumors and even some erroneous published reports continue to swirl around recent
Oklahoma
transfer
Keith Nichol
and what appears to be an impending commitment to
Michigan State
, the Spartans lost a quality person and player when Library (PA) South Park quarterback
Connor Dixon
requested and received permission to transfer from the University.
Dixon, the former
Associated Press
Pennsylvania AA Player of the Year committed to Michigan State in 2005 and appeared in just one game, last year's opener against
UAB
where he completed 3-of-5 passes for 37 yards and a touchdown.
"It's true, I'm no longer at Michigan State," said Dixon. "I do not know (where I'm going); I'm in the process of looking for a place to play."
Dixon, contacted at his family’s home in Library, PA. said he was taking his time and gathering information before proceeding any further.
He told GSN his reasons for deciding to leave the program.
"There were a lot of reasons, really. I had an injury and I was unable to compete (in spring ball) as much as I wanted to and I just felt that I needed a new start."
One thing Dixon wanted to make clear was that the rumors of Keith Nichol joining the Spartans had nothing to do with his decision.
"No, actually I had no idea about (the) Nichol (rumors) until yesterday. I just feel that a lot of things didn't go my way or how I expected," he said.
Dixon said the injury won't keep him from competing for whatever school he decides to attend, but admitted, "It was bad timing."
Dixon was embroiled in a pitched battle for the backup job behind fifth year senior
Brian Hoyer
. Both redshirt freshmen
Nick Foles
and
Kirk Cousins
appear to have drawn even, if not ahead of Dixon for the backup job.
If Nichol does indeed join the MSU fold, that would have only further clouded the chances of Dixon getting meaningful playing time.
Dixon said the Michigan State coaching staff was very helpful to him and was disappointed to see him leave, but offered him their assistance. The split, he said, was amicable.
The 6-foot-4, 185-pound sophomore initially committed to
John L. Smith
in 2005 but elected to stay in the program after Smith's dismissal.
Dixon said at this point he hasn't heard from any colleges seeking his services but expects to hear from those who lost out to Michigan State initially including
Boston College
,
Wake Forest
,
Toledo
,
Bowling Green
,
Eastern Michigan
,
Indiana
,
Duke
, and
Pittsburgh
.
