EAST LANSING -
Michigan State
forward
Bryan Lerg
today signed a two-year deal with the
Edmonton Oilers
and was assigned to the team's AHL affilliate in Springfield, IL.
Lerg is expected to join his new team today and be available for their contest against the Wilkes-Barre Penguins.
“This is every hockey player’s dream – to have an opportunity to play in the National Hockey League," said Lerg. "It's been my dream since I first put on skates at two years old, and Im very excited about the opportunity to go out and prove myself. I’d like to thank the Oilers for giving me this chance, and I could not be happier to be in their organization.”
The former Spartans captain played a huge role in helping MSU claim the National Championship last season and now has his sites set on getting to the big club and winning a Stanley Cup.
Lerg has been successful everywhere he's gone, playing two seasons with the US Under-18 team and the US National Junior team that won the silver medal in the 2004 IIHF World Under-18 championships.
"I’d also like to thank everyone at Michigan State – not just within the hockey staff, but everyone at the University,” he continued. “My career at Michigan State allowed me not only to win a National Championship, but also to be a part of one of the best college experiences and hockey programs in the nation. I cannot imagine a better place to have spent my last four years.”
