Goalie Jeff Lerg a Hobey Baker Finalist

Spartan goaltender Jeff Lerg is one of 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Award, given annually to the best player in college hockey.

Michigan State continues a tradition of excellence in net. Jeff Lerg was named today as one of 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Award, given annually to the best player in college hockey.

"This is a great honor," Lerg said in an MSU release. "It’s always nice to be recognized for your accomplishments. Its special, particularly when you look at the guys who have been finalists from Michigan State. It’s amazing company to be in."

Former Spartan goalie Ryan Miller won the trophy in 2001, only the second at his position to earn the award, and Green and White net-minder Chad Alban was runner-up in 1998. Lerg is now the tenth Spartan to be a finalist for the award; four have been nominated twice.

For the season, Lerg recorded a .925 save percentage (11 in the nation) and allowed an average of 2.25 goals per game (17) to go along with a .654 winning percentage (7) and a 23-11-5 overall record.

Lerg single-handedly carried the Spartans through the month of January, winning 4 consecutive CCHA Goaltender of the Week awards and earning the conference player of the month award as well. For the month, Lerg was unbeaten at 5-0-3 and recorded a 1.32 goals-against average and .959 save percentage.

A 25-member panel, along with another round of fan voting (available through the Hobey Baker Award Web site) will whittle the 10 finalists to three on April 2. A winner will be named April 11.
