GSN spoke with Midland quarterback Andrew Maxwell, who confirmed his verbal commitment to Michigan State today. MIDLAND - Andrew Maxwell's name has been on the tongue of Spartans fans ever since the strong-armed quarterback led the Chemics into the State Finals at Ford Field and appeared to have Detroit King on the ropes before eventually succumbing to Nick Perry and co. Maxwell threw unofficially for 1,831 yards while completing 54% of his passes as a junior and is ranked the 14th best player and one of top two quarterbacks in the state by Scout.com's Allen Trieu. His commitment gives Michigan State three of the top 15 players in the state and four verbal commitments total for the early 2009 season. While Maxwell doesn't figure to take over the helm until 2010 at the earliest, his commitment gives the Spartans the kind of depth that a Big Ten program needs at the pivotal quarterback position. At 6-foot-3, 195-pounds, Maxwell had his breakout game as a junior against Lowell enroute to the Finals when he went 23-of-40 for 314 yards and four touchdowns against one interception. Midland took a 21-7 halftime lead against King before the Crusaders erupted for 40 second half points against an undermanned Chemics defense. The one quality that sticks out for the senior quarterback is his poise. Despite being under pressure against several opponents his junior season, Maxwell seemed to know when to tuck the ball and run and when to hang in the pocket. Getting a commitment from this future star really puts Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio ahead of the game for recruiting the 2009 class. Stay tuned for a full interview with Maxwell coming soon. |
