Dominance: Lerg National Player of the Month

Jeff Lerg's stellar January statistics: he had a .959 save percentage; a 1.32 goals-against average; at one time he put together a career-high 190:54 shutout streak; and the Spartans overall record? An unbeaten 5-0-3.

EAST LANSING – Jeff Lerg owned January. The Michigan State junior goalie has pocketed four consecutive CCHA Goaltender of the Week awards (the first to ever do so) and was named the National College Hockey Player of the Month for January today by the Hockey Commissioners' Association.

Lerg led a resurgent Michigan State squad to a 5-0-3 record for the month, highlighted by a win and a tie in a series against top-ranked Michigan last weekend. At one point, Lerg strung together 190:54 consecutive minutes of shutout play, a career-best.

A Liviona, Mich. native, Lerg registered a .959 save percentage for the month with a 1.32 goals-against average. In the last six games he holds a .971 Spct. and a stingy 0.81 GGA.

Michigan State hockey continues a tradition of excellence at goalie. Lerg follows in the skates of Spartan greats like 2001 Hobey Baker Award winner Ryan Miller and 1998 Hobey Baker finalist Chad Alban.

Lerg will look to extend his brilliant play into February and make it five-straight CCHA Goaltender of the Week Awards against Nebraska-Omaha this weekend in a pair of home games Friday and Saturday.
