RACINE, WI - When Tom Izzo landed Milwaukee star point guard Korie Lucious for
2008, he might have had something under his sleeve in attempting to lure one of the top prospects from Wisconsin in 2009.
Jamil Wilson, a 6-foot-6 power forward from Horlick High School in
Racine, WI has been compared to Marvin Williams, the Atlanta Hawks
star and ex-Tar Heel.
He attacks the basket, plays multiple forward slots and averaged 17
points per game last season as a sophomore.
Although he has not received any offers yet, Marquette, Michigan State, Ohio State, Purdue, and Wisconsin have expressed great
interest.
But when Izzo signed Lucious, he scored big points with Wilson.
"Korie and I are like family," said Wilson, a five-star prospect
ranked by scout.com. "We are very cool and I already know someone at
MSU and it would be great to play with him."
Wilson also noted that having a friend on the team from the same
area does not make his decision a slam dunk and he will explore all
the school before deciding on a school.
Is the distance from Milwaukee going to be a factor in decide which school to attend?
"It just has to be a reasonable trip for my family to come see me
play from time to time," said Wilson.
Wilson has watched Spartan basketball on television and has great
things to say not only about Tom Izzo but also what he can bring to
the table as well.
"He (Izzo) runs a pretty tight program," said Wilson. "His teams
play together very well and they are like a family."
What does Wilson think are the stronger parts of his game?
"I think I'm very versatile, Im well rounded and I can do pretty
much anything. Low-block, mid-range, shoot the three, play zone, and
also block shots."
Wilson is working hard this summer, prepping for his junior season
at Horlick, but the interest from some of the top school in the
country is there, and although he might not be a Marvin Williams, he
has the talent and skill to make his own legacy at whichever school
he may choose.
Analysis:
This guy is a very special talent and has emerged as one of the
elite players nationally in the class of 2009. Tom Izzo loves these
big athletic guys who are a major impact on the court.
Wilson
resembles current Spartan high-intensity power forward Marquise Gray
but has more scoring ability and can take over a game inside.
While it looks like perimeter scoring may be plenty in the next few
years for MSU, Izzo still keeps his teams tough and strong on
defense by targeting major shot-blockers like Wilson.
