LB Gordon Expected To Breakout For State

“Gordon’s biggest asset is his motor. He's an explosive player that can run, and he has a knack for always being around the football.” -- Linebackers coach Mike Tressel

EAST LANSING - Red-shirt freshman Eric Gordon made a splash this spring. Not only did he record impressive statistics in scrimmages, but he also turned heads at the national level.

His spring performances were enough to land Gordon on The Sporting News All-Spring Team. Although his status as a starter or backup has yet to be fully determined, there is no doubt his speed and athletic ability has given him an opportunity for significant playing time. His numbers make the case.

Gordon excelled through spring, averaging 9.0 tackles in three scrimmages before making 5 tackles (one for loss) in the Green and White game. In the four spring scrimmages overall, his tackles for loss totaled 29 yards.

Gordon is also a team player—someone who displays the kind of leadership attributes spoken so highly of by Dantonio and staff.

Gordon took home the Scout Team Defensive Player of the Year award from the Spartan Senior Awards Banquet held last November. He was also the co-recipient of the Jim Adams Award for Unsung Heroes, given to players who don’t get the attention they deserve.

So when people like linebackers coach Mike Tressel speak highly of Gordon, it rings a little truer than it might for other young, unproven athletes.

After the spring game in an MSU release, Tressel had this to say: “Eric picked up the defensive system quickly this spring, which allowed him to start playing the game fast. Once he became comfortable with the system, Eric became a more confident player, so he finally was able to cut it loose on the field. That's when he really began to display his play-making ability," said Tressel.

“Gordon’s biggest asset is his motor. He's an explosive player that can run, and he has a knack for always being around the football.”

With a new scheme that places a premium on zone-blitzing and fast, disruptive defenders, Gordon is making the case for a prominent spot in a revamped Spartan defense.
