Justin Abdelkader scored the go-ahead goal with just 29 seconds remaining in the game and Chris Mueller added the insurance goal into an empty net as Michigan State came from behind to win the National Championship in St. Louis, MO tonight.
Just like the semifinal win against Maine, the Spartans fell behind 1-0, but rallied when Tim Kennedy scored on the power play early in the third period to tie the score.
Both teams went into grinding, hard-checking mode as time began ticking off the clock looking to get the go-ahead goal. But it was Kennedy who dug the puck out from behind the net, spun off his defender and fed Abdelkader, who's low shot between two defenders beat Boston College goaltender Cory Schneider.
"It was just hard work and persistence," said Michigan State Captain Chris Lawrence. "We were a persistent group all along. The guys stuck together..people doubted us, but our fans stayed with us. We pulled together and had a great game."
Michigan State's Justin Abdelkader was voted the game's Most Outstanding Player for his game-winning goal.
After allowing the opening goal, Michigan State's Jeff Lerg stoned the Eagles including a diving stop at point blank range that prevented BC from going up two-nothing.
"This was a really tough game," said Lerg. "They were one of the quickest team's we've played all year. It was a really gutsy effort by our team coming back with two (third period) goals."
