Trannon mulling return to hardwood

Trannon mulling return to hardwood

``I say what I said last week, he's 60-40. I think he's 80/20 that he wants to come back, its just a matter of figuring out how many things in football would help or hurt him.

DETROIT - Michigan State's career receiving leader, Matt Trannon could return to his successful role as a power forward on the MSU basketball team.

Trannon is mulling a return to the hardwoods after receiving advice from former head coach John L. Smith who openly wondered if the 6-foot-6 receiver would even get an invite to the NFL combines.

But MSU head basketball coach Tom Izzo says Trannon could really assist the hoops team if he has the desire.

``You know I talked to Matt this morning and I'm going to meet with him (again) tonight," said Izzo. ``There are still some concerns for him on the football part of it."

``I really appreciated John L. support on it, because I thinks it would be what's best. I think Matt wants to but there's always other people involved and so I'm going to be meeting with a few people tonight and see where that takes us."

Izzo said Trannon's family and advisors are trying to sort through what course would be best for the two-sport star who wants to be a professional football player, but he might also have a future in some form of pro basketball because of his size and ability to rebound.

The Flint native is weighing whether to put all of his time into a program designed to help him improve his skills for the NFL combine or whether to play hoops and increase his chances of perhaps playing overseas if the NFL doesn't come calling.

The coach says he thinks the chances of Trannon returning, perhaps after a period of rest are better than 50-50.

``I say what I said last week, he's 60-40. I think he's 80/20 that he wants to come back, its just a matter of figuring out how many things in football would help or hurt him. And how many things in basketball would help or hurt him to accomplish his goal of playing in the NFL."
