EAST LANSING - Troy Smith threw two touchdown passes and the Buckeyes tandem of Chris Wells and Antonio Pittman combined for 101 yards rushing and two touchdowns to propel #1 Ohio State to an easy 38-7 win over hapless Michigan State.
The Spartans offense was non-existent as it struggled behind ineffective Drew Stanton who went 8-of-16 for 53 yards and an interception. State mustered only 163 yards in total offense.
Most of the State offense came when Brian Hoyer relieved Stanton in the third quarter and engineered Michigan State's only touchdown drive. Hoyer went 11-of-14 for 81 yards. Backup running back A.J. Jimmerson scored MSU's only TD on a two-yard plunge. Jimmerson rushed for just 13 yards on four carries.
Junior Jehuu Caulcrick led MSU's rushing attack with 48 yards on 15 carries. Ohio State whipped Michigan State in every phase of the ballgame including special teams where ace returner Ted Ginn, Jr. gashed the Spartans with a 60-yard punt return for a touchdown.
Anthony Gonzales led the Buckeyes with seven catches for 120 yards and a touchdown. The #1 Buckeyes move to 7-0, Michigan State falls to 3-4 and travel to Evanston, IN to face Northwestern (2-5)who fell to Purdue 31-10.
