Michigan State starting left guard Peter Clifford is expected to be out
for another 1-3 weeks after suffering a knee injury. Kenny Shane has
moved into Clifford's starting position and played well. If Clifford
injury is slow healing, MSU could petition for a medical redshirt season

Former Michigan State head coach Frank "Muddy" Waters died this week of
heart failure. Waters was 83 years old. He served as Michigan State's
head coach during a turbulent period after the abrupt resignation of
Darryl Rogers, who jumped to Arizona State University. Waters' dream
while coaching Hillsdale College was to someday be the Spartans head man,
but he had little success on the field of play, going 10-23 during his
tenure. Waters is best known for turning down an invitation to take
his Hillsdale team to the Tangerine Bowl in 1955 after being told
African-American players on the Hillsdale team would not be allowed to
participate. Hillsdale named the football stadium after Waters.
