EAST LANSING - Michigan State elected defensive tackle Cliff Ryan along with three others as captains, the first time head coach John L. Smith has allowed players to elect captains in his tenure at State.

Ryan, along with quarterback Drew Stanton, linebacker David Herron, Jr. and center Kyle Cook were all given the honor the team announced yesterday.

Ryan spoke to GSN about what an honor it was to be selected as a captain and carry on the tradition of Saginaw area players being named to the position.

Sophomores Brandon Long and Ervin Baldwin are in a virtual dead heat for the starting rush end job so far during fall drills.

Baldwin, a highly touted junior college transfer from Reedley Community College (CA) was expected to immediately grab the job but Long has shown surprising progress to date and the two could actually see time together in obvious passing situations.

Baldwin talked about the depth MSU has along the defensive line.
