EAST LANSING - Michigan State forward Drew Naymick is expected to decide by Wednesday whether he will sit out the rest of the 2005-06 basketball season and apply for a medical redshirt from the NCAA.
Naymick, 6-foot-11, from Muskegon, MI was expected to play a big role in Michigan State's development and attempt to make the NCAA's Final Four for the second straight season, but instead has been hampered by injuries including shoulder surgery that has been slow to heal.
"He's just not healthy right now," Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo told the media. "We're just trying to figure it out. He just has not been able to physically go at the pace and level we need him to go at."
Michigan State struggled early on as Naymick was unable to develop into the strong post presence they were expecting from him. Since that time sophomore Goran Suton, Marquise Gray and senior Matt Trannon have all come on to fill the void.
If Naymick redshirts he would be in a position to have two solid years left after senior Paul Davis graduates this summer. He has only appeared in seven games and meets the NCAA criteria for a medical redshirt.
