Weekly wrap: Illini's Zook raids MSU staff

Illini steals recruiting coordinator in the middle of impressive Spartans effort. Could loss of Mitchell put damper on MSU ability to attract top notch recruits?

EAST LANSING - During the peak of recruiting season, MSU has lost its recruiting coordinator. Running backs coach Reggie Mitchell has joined the staff of new Illini head coach Ron Zook.

Zook named Mitchell as an assistant to his staff on Wednesday, a move that could derail some of the positive momentum that State has made in its recruiting efforts.

"Reggie is a tremendous hire for our staff," Zook told the Associated Press. "Reggie will be an integral part of the recruiting strategy that becomes of utmost importance in the upcoming month."

MSU already has 18 verbal commitments from incoming prep stars and has gotten several quality recurits. Some MSU observers blame the loss of prized recruit Antonio Bass to Michigan on Mitchell's departure.

Love, Campbell, Bell get diversionary program

MSU football players Terry Love, Irving Campbell and Mike Bell will have charges dropped against them if they complete a diversionary program for first time offenders.

"The prosecutor's office took this case for what it was worth -- a prank between friends," Michigan State coach John L. Smith said in a statement Wednesday.

The program is expected to be community service related.

Randall to compete in all star game Michigan State tight end Jason Randall is among a group of senior Big Ten players who are expected to compete in the Villages Gridiron Classic on January 15, 2005 in surburban Miami, FL.

Randall, a native of Muskegon, MI is looking for exposure for a possible professional career. He played behind the more heralded Eric Knott for most of his career until becoming the starter in his senior season after Knott fell out of favor with the coaching staff.
