(EAST LANSING) - The Michigan State Spartans got their second verbal commitment of the 2005 recruiting season when Grandville's Andrew Hawken, one of the Midwest's top linebackers, made a verbal commitment to attend the East Lansing school.

Hawken, 6' 2", 220-pound linebacker/running back will likely line up in the Mike linebacker position for Michigan State since the university seldom uses as fullback in its spread offense.

MSU beat out several schools including Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana for Hawken's services. "It feels great," said Hawken. "I've always wanted to play football in the Big Ten and that was one of my goals, to play for a program like this. I really like the coaching staff. [Coach Smith] is a really cool head coach to play for."

Hawken rushed for 1,270 yards and 23 touchdowns as a junior last season. The Grandville junior said that staying close to home - the MSU campus is just a one hour drive for his parents - was a big factor in his deciding to play for coach John L. Smith.

"I just liked it," Hawken said. "It all just seemed to fit together for me."
