Michigan State’s roll on the recruiting trail continued last week with a long-awaited commitment from linebacker Tyriq Thompson.
The standout from Detroit King picked the Spartans over many Big Ten offers, including Michigan, Iowa and Wisconsin. We take a look at what the senior linebacker brings:
It takes just a handful of players on Thompson’s film to come up with a couple words to describe him: Tenacious and relentless. Thompson is a player who comes full speed to the play and just gets after the ball. He jumps out on film because of his ability to fly to the ball.
When he hits, he really collides with someone and wraps them up at the time same. It is a vicious combination that he hits with.
He is at his best when he is allowed to pin his ears back and come after a play. Blitzing up the middle or from the edge is an area where Thompson excels and should continue to do so with a good combination of speed and size.
While his junior film does not reflect it, Thompson started his high school career at safety. That ability makes him a solid candidate to be a STAR linebacker at Michigan State.
There is plenty of blitzing in Thompson’s highlights and he excels at it, but one area he will have to improve at the next level is how high he plays. He often has his pad level high when he meets blockers, which is not a hindrance to him at the high school level because he is strong and athletic. At the next level, Big Ten offensive linemen will knock him back or down with a high pad level.
