Hamler spends the day at Michigan State

Orchard Lake St. Mary's sophomore wide receiver holds an early offer from the Spartans and got the chance to see more of the program Wednesday. He talks the latest on Michigan State.

K.J. Hamler was the first known offer for Michigan State in the class of 2017 and the Orchard Lake St. Mary’s sophomore was back on campus in East Lansing last week.

Hamler said his visit Wednesday, as part of “Spartan Day,” was nice.

”It is a beautiful campus,” he said. “The coaches and players treat me like family there. I just like being on their campus.”

Being a wide receiver, the 5-foot-8, 150-pound Hamler spent much of his day watching the wide receiver, which he said was a good experience.

”They treat me like I was their little brother,” he said. “They gave me tips on what to do when I’m in the game and stuff like that. They showed me new techniques to do and how to run my routes better.”

He also said that he continues to build a good relationship with wide receivers coach Terrence Samuel.

“I think I have a good relationship with him,” he said. “We talk a bunch of times. He really is a good coach and gives me good tips on things, tells me to stay humble and keep focused on my grades and school. He is a good coach to me.”

The Spartans and Toledo are the pair of early offers he holds, but this summer he spent his time making impressions at camps. The latest stop was in July at Ohio State for Friday Night Lights.

“That was pretty good, too,” he said. “There was a lot of good competition down there. … A lot of the coaches just told me that they liked me and stuff like that. They told me as soon as the football season starts to send them some varsity film and we will see what happens from there.”

With camps behind him and the offers to his name, Hamler is geared up for his first varsity season at OLSM. Having a Week 1 clash on tap with Southfield, he can’t wait to get started.

“The first game, that is going to the biggest game, that and Brother Rice, so I am really excited for those two games,” he said.
