Jones on Butkus watch list

Spartans linebacker making move to middle linebacker spot this season with the departures of Max Bullough and Denicos Allen.

The Michigan State linebacker corps will look a lot different in 2014 with the departures of Max Bullough and Denicos Allen.

The onus has fallen on Taiwan Jones, the lone holdover from last season, and Tuesday, he was named to the preseason Butkus Award watch list.

The award is given annually to the nation’s top linebacker.

Jones spent the spring transitioning to playing middle linebacker, to replace Bullough, after spending his first three seasons in East Lansing at outside linebacker.

The 6-foot-3, 255-pound senior was fourth on the team last season with 67 tackles.

Other Big Ten players on the watch list:

Maryland’s Yannik Cudjoe-Virgil, Ohio State’s Curtis Grant, Penn State’s Mike Hull, IllinoisMason Monheim and Michigan’s Jake Ryan. Recommended Stories
