Impact: L.J. Scott

MSU picked up a huge commitment on Thursday night, but what does it say about the program on the recruiting trail right now?

It has been a while since Michigan State has reeled in a prospect from Ohio with an Ohio State offer, but now it has two such players in the 2015 class.

Hubbard (Ohio) running back L.J. Scott committed to Michigan State on Thursday night, picking the Spartans over the Buckeyes in what became his final two schools. Scott joined Cincinnati (Ohio) Winton Woods offensive tackle Noah Listermann as Ohio natives committed to Michigan State with Ohio State offers.

Not to diminish anything regarding Listermann’s commitment to Michigan State, which was big in many ways, but the commitment of Scott says even more about the Spartans.

Not only did Scott carry an Ohio State offer, but had one from Alabama, Auburn and just about any relevant football school in the nation. Yet Michigan State set its sights on him early and locked in on him being a running back in the 2015 class.

Impressively, even after there was a lot of buzz about Scott heading to Ohio State with his 2016 teammate and fellow running back George Hill, Michigan State weathered that storm to secure a verbal commitment Thursday night.

Was it the Rose Bowl? Was it a 13-1 season? Was it Le’Veon Bell? It was a lot of things, it seems, but the commitment of a prominent running back like Scott shows the Spartans are becoming more than just a threat on the field to the traditional Big Ten powers, but now on the recruiting trail as well.

And now, Michigan State will bring in a workhorse, power back that fits the system as well as a running back can – and it sent a message in the process.
