Big Board: Linebacker

Big Board: Linebacker

Between offered prospects and unoffered prospects, MSU has good options on their board -- and a couple that could be Spartans by summer's end.

Michigan State had just a handful of scholarship linebackers this spring, but will bring in three more this fall as four were signed in the 2014 class.

With more depth in place, the 2015 class will bring in a couple of linebackers, but with a focus on the outside.

This big board starts with a target that we expect will wind up at Michigan State in Detroit King linebacker Tyriq Thompson.

The names:

Tyriq Thompson – Detroit (Mich.) King

Thompson is a name with Cincinnati (Ohio) Winton Woods offensive tackle Noah Listermann that is brought up as a soon-to-be commitment and it is easy to see why. Thompson has liked the Spartans from the offset, as they offered him early on and have stayed near the top. He likes Wisconsin and Northwestern as well, but the Spartans should be tough to beat and it is expected he will wind up in East Lansing – a commitment that could be made this summer.

Anthony McKee – Columbus (Ohio) Walnut Ridge

Michigan State picked up a commitment from Walnut Ridge in 2014 with defensive end Robert Bowers and is looking for another in the 2015 class. McKee was in mid-March and Bowers has been in his ear for a while. He has talked about trying to be committed somewhere before the season starts in the fall.

Ricky DeBerry – Richmond (Va.) St. Christopher's

DeBerry narrowed his list to 20 in March, keeping Michigan State in the mix. He plans to narrow it down to eight schools in August and says MSU has a good chance to make that list. Ron Burton has been recruiting DeBerry and the Spartans could be more of a player in this five-star's recruitment than many think.

Jerome Baker – Cleveland Benedictine

Baker visited Michigan State for the spring game, but holds offers from just about anyone. It has been assumed for a long time the Ohio product will wind up at Ohio State, but the Spartans certainly are looking to make a push for the talented athlete who also is a solid running back.

Saleem Brightwell – Paramus Catholic (N.J.)

Brightwell visited Michigan State this spring and could be a player in the class, hailing from powerhouse Paramus Catholic, which produced two commitments to Michigan in 2014. He also has offers from Wisconsin and Iowa among Big Ten schools.

Asmar Bilal – Indianapolis Ben Davis

From the same high school as former Michigan State safety Isaiah Lewis, Bilal was offered a couple months ago. He spoke highly of it, saying he saw a great opportunity in East Lansing. Michigan is thought to be high on his list. Nick Conner – Dublin (Ohio) Scioto

Conner has been hoping for a pair of offers in his recruitment: Ohio State and Michigan State. The middle linebacker will camp on Sunday in hopes of earning that offer from Michigan State. If he does, it figures to send Michigan State to the lead in his recruitment.

Chris Green – Toledo (Ohio) Catholic Central

Green has double-digit offers, but not much yet from the upper levels of the Big Ten. He holds Illinois and Indiana among schools like West Virginia. He will camp Sunday in East Lansing.

Junior McMullen – Oak Park

McMullen is a Western Michigan commitment, but a Michigan State offer would probably change that. He already holds offers from a bunch of MAC schools and will camp in East Lansing this weekend.

Troy Henderson – Lakewood (Ohio) St. Edward's

Henderson visited this spring with a few of his teammates from St. Edwards. He will be at camp Sunday in hopes of earning an offer. After his spring visit, he spoke about seeing a good fit and liking how MSU runs its defense.
