If Michigan State is going to win the 2017 Big Ten Tournament, it is going to have to do so a little bit farther from East Lansing than usual.
With the Big Ten expanding its reach beyond the Midwest, it now will take its tournament beyond the centrally located Indianapolis and Chicago.
The conference's annual tournament will take place in Washington D.C. at the Verizon Center in March of 2017.
"We're thrilled to announce plans to host the Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament in Washington, D.C.," Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany said. "We have a great amount of respect for basketball in this region of the country and are pleased that we were able to place this tournament at the Verizon Center at this first possible opportunity in March 2017."
When Washington D.C. hosts, it will mark the first time a city other than Indianapolis and Chicago will play host for the first time in its history. The 2017 tournament will be the 20th anniversary of the tournament, with Indianapolis having hosted its 10th in 206 and Chicago having its ninth in 2015.
On Monday, the Big Ten announced the Gavitt Tipoff Games, an annual series starting in 2015 to take place between Big Ten and Big East teams.
Michigan State won the tournament in 2013 in Indianapolis.
