MSU to meet ND in ACC/Big Ten Challenge

Spartans to meet Fighting Irish for the first time since the 1979 NCAA Tournament.

Michigan State and Notre Dame have a historic rivalry on the football field, but that will shift to the hardwood this year.

The Spartans and Fighting Irish will meet in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Dec. 3, while the football teams will not play next season.

"We are very excited to be playing Notre Dame in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge," Spartans coach Tom Izzo said. "It's great to renew a natural rivalry, one that has provided some great games in both football and basketball over the years.

"I've loved watching the football games both at MSU and in traveling to Notre Dame, and now I'm excited to take part in it first-hand."

The basketball tradition is long between the two schools as well, but the teams have not met since the regional final of the 1979 NCAA Tournament, which Michigan State won on its way to a national title. The Fighting Irish lead the all-time series 59-35.

Michigan State has a 6-8 record in Big Ten/ACC Challenge history and is 1-5 in the past six, with three losses to North Carolina.
