Michigan State shines, advances to semifinals

Fueled by Branden Dawson, the Spartans rolled over Northwestern on Friday night and into a Saturday semifinal matchup with Wisconsin.

It was a slow start Friday night for Michigan State and Northwestern, but it didn't last long.

The Spartans brought all the elements that made them a preseason favorite and put on display what they are capable of when healthy in the 67-51 win.

Junior Branden Dawson was the spark for Michigan State early, having 10 points on 5 of 7 shooting with three rebounds – all offensive. He kept up the pace in the second half, finishing with 16 points and nine rebounds.

Gary Harris had 13 points and seven rebounds playing not far from his hometown of Fishers, Ind.

Michigan State used a 24-12 run to close the first half after Adreian Payne went out with his second foul with 8:41 left before halftime to lead 40-22.

Center Matt Costello had a pair of highlights in the first half, the second coming on a fancy find from Denzel Valentine. The sophomore guard stole the ball and broke downcourt, flicking a pass behind his back to Costello for the dunk and an intentional foul call.

Michigan State will play Wisconsin in the semifinals Saturday.
