Keith Appling was not about to be denied on his senior day.
Fittingly, the 3-pointers were Appling's first since the Spartans won in Iowa City on Jan. 28. He finished with 12 points – his most since the same game in Iowa when he had 16.
Adreian Payne had 14 points in his final game at Breslin Center.
Both teams came out of the gates hot, as Iowa hit seven of its first eight shots, while the Spartans hit six of their first eight. Roy Devyn Marble keyed the Hawkeyes early, with 16 first-half points. He finished with a game-high 24.
Iowa closed the first half on a 14-6 run to take a 41-39 lead.
The Spartans came out in the second half on a 9-0 run. Appling had five points in that span and eight of the first 14 points of the second half for the Spartans.
With a 53-51 lead, the Spartans went on a 15-4 run with all the points coming from bench players – and capped by an 8-0 run by Travis Trice.
Trice had a season-high 17 points and hit three 3-pointers. Michigan State hit 10 of 17 3's.
The win avoided the Spartans having the third five home loss season at Breslin Center.
