It started at the beginning of the year when Pat Narduzzi did not find a school looking to make him their next head coach. After interviewing for head coaching jobs and being pursued by Texas A&M early in 2012, Michigan State continues to see Narduzzi make the Spartans one of the best defensive teams in college football.
2013 saw the longtime Mark Dantonio assistant deliver his best work yet as the Spartans had the No. 1 defense in the Football Bowl Subdivision including being ranked No. 1 in total defense (248.2 yards per game), rushing defense (80.8 ypg.) and opponent third-down conversions (.227).
The performance delivered by Narduzzi’s defense was also recognized by college football as Narduzzi won the 2013 Frank Broyles Award, which is awarded to the nation’s top assistant coach. The honor makes Narduzzi the first Michigan State coach to win the award since its inception in 1996.
The question going forward will be how long the Spartans can keep Narduzzi as their defensive coordinator before he takes a head coach position.
