Spartans embrace November and road games

Michigan State racking up wins late in the season and way from home under Mark Dantonio

With its win last week at Nebraska, Michigan State has beaten every Big Ten under Mark Dantonio – and won in every Big Ten stadium.

Not only have the Spartans won at every other venue, they have won their most recent trip to every away stadium except for Michigan.

They also are 15-5 in November since Dantonio arrived in 2007.

"That is the intention, first of all," Dantonio said. "That's the mindset we've tried to have since coming here. That is also something we've developed, especially the road game atmosphere, road game environment that we've created on our football team."

In the Spartans Big Ten Championships season in 2010 and Legends Division title season in 2011, they went 7-0 combined in November – with a 3-0 record on the road.

"You certainly better play well down the stretch if you're going to be a champion," Dantonio said. "We put ourselves in a position to compete for a championship a number of times here. We find ourselves in the same place again. It's very important we understand it just doesn't happen, you've got to continue to reach and chase excellence."

Senior linebacker Max Bullough said the success on the road is keyed by the teams' mindset.

"Coach D says we always come together on the road and I think that's as true this year as much as any," he said. "Guys really come together and play together and with excitement.

"Personally, I get excited to play in other places. It's almost more exciting than at home just because I guess that's how I am. I like going somewhere where we're not wanted and doing what we wanna do."
