Before East Grand Rapids even opened its season last week, it already brought a highlight for quarterback Mikey Roth.
"I was actually voted captain and I'm the first junior ever at East to be voted captain," Roth said. "That was a good way to start it."
The good start continued for Roth and the Pioneers, with a 24-7 win against Grand Rapids Catholic Central last week. Roth was 9 of 17 passing with a touchdown for the Pioneers.
He visited East Lansing on Friday for the season-opener against Western Michigan.
"I got to talk to Coach Salem, Coach Staten and Coach Blackwell," he said. "I've been in contact with them. I emailed them (Monday) and they emailed me back. I really enjoyed the game with the nice little weather delay.
"It was a great atmosphere. It was really cool to go down on the field before the game, I've never done that before."
Roth and his Carter Masek, a junior linebacker at East Grand Rapids, came up for the barbeque put on before the game for recruits.
"We had the barbeque and I hung out in the player's lounge, which was awesome," he said. "It is ridiculous. Talked to the coaches. I had a great time and it was a lot of fun."
As college coaches have been able to contact junior recruits since September 1, Roth has heard from a few schools.
"Well, I heard from MSU (on Monday night) and Northwestern a little bit," Roth said.
