Indispensable Spartan #8

Indispensable Spartan #8

Spartan Digest is back with our annual look at the most important Spartans for the upcoming season. Each year we come up with a different theme and this year we'll look at the 30 most indispensable Spartans in 2013.

Michigan State saw George Perles take the field as head coach 30-years ago. Spartan Digest recognizes Perles with this seasons 30 Most Indispensable Spartans with a look at those members of the football team we feel will have major roles if the Spartans are to have success on the field.

Two Spartans share the No. 8 spot this preseason.

Here is #8

Jairus Jones

HT: 6-1 WT: 213

Position: Star Linebacker

Experience: Three-time letter winner

Taiwan Jones

HT: 6-3 WT: 250

Position: Star Linebacker

Experience: Two-time letter winner

2012 Season: Injury kept Jairus Jones out of the final six games of the season but he returned for the Spartans bowl game. Collected 18 tackles but more was expected out of the Florida native.

Taiwan Jones saw action in all 13 games last season with four starts at the Star linebacker spot pushing out a senior in Chris Norman. Posted 38 tackles but showed some kinks in his overall game that had the Spartans rotating the two throughout the game and season.

Strengths: Both players have game experience and should be expected to perform at a high level. Taiwan has great length for the position to go with his physical size at 250-pounds.

Weaknesses: Jairus lacks the reps at the Star position held by Taiwan but showed promise in the spring. Jairus lacks the physical size at only 213-pounds that may be needed to bang on a consistent basis but could cause match-up problems with his ability to cover and come off the edge on a blitz.

Overall: It will be interesting to see how Pat Narduzzi works both players into the rotation early in the season. Both bring a different skill set and could be looked to fill specific roles within a game. The Spartans made the move to ensure they have depth at the position and either player could be given the start.
