Michigan State offensive lineman Skyler Burkland had to make the hard decision of forgoing his final two years of eligibility after multiple injuries during his career.

The end has come for one of the more promising prospects signed during Mark Dantonio’s tenure as Michigan State head coach.

Junior offensive tackle Skyler Burkland has officially announced his retirement from football due to multiple injuries during his Spartans career.

Dantonio stressed this was not an easy decision by the Ohio native in a Michigan State press release.

“This was a difficult decision for Skyler,” said Dantonio. “We’ll certainly miss him on the football field, but he’ll remain heavily involved in our program and continue to work on earning his degree.”

Burkland looked destined for stardom early in his career when he earned the starting right tackle spot as a red-shirt freshman. However, during the Spartans game against Notre Dame, Burkland fractured/dislocated his left ankle in the first half and missed the remainder of the season.

That followed last season with the 6-foot-7, 315-pounder missing time during camp and the Spartans first game against Boise State.
