Iowa CITY, Iowa - Aaron White scored a career-high 27 points and then finished off an impressive Thursday night by summing up his team's 76-67 win against Penn State.

"It wasn't pretty, but a win's a win," White said.

The Hawkeyes ended a two-game skid with a hard-fought victory against the last-place team in the Big Ten. Penn State fell to 0-9 in the league.

The Nittany Lions opened the game on an 8-1 run. Iowa responded with a 14-3 spurt and never trailed again. Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery credited defense as the reason for the turnaround.

Iowa junior Melsahn Basabe started his first game of the season and came through with 10 points and 10 rebounds. He replaced Anthony Clemmons, who contributed eight points off of the bench.

"Whatever is best for the team," Clemmons said. "I just wanted to bring some energy off of the bench."

The Hawkeyes (14-7 overall, 3-5 Big Ten) outscored the visitors 27-12 on points off of the bench. Reserve Eric May added seven points and backup Zach McCabe five for Iowa.

Iowa travels to Minnesota on Sunday (Noon CT, BTN).
