When Nebraska travels to No. 23 Michigan State on Sunday, it will do so without starting forward Brandon Ubel.

LINCOLN, Neb. - Coming off a tough loss to No. 2 Michigan on Wednesday, Nebraska will look to bounce back as they travel to East Lansing, Michigan, to take on No. 23 Michigan State this weekend.

Friday's game previewing press conference featured breaking news from Nebraska head coach Tim Miles, as he announced that point guard Mike Peltz will be out for the season after having knee surgery.

In addition, senior starting forward Brandon Ubel is out indefinitely after fracturing his elbow, Wednesday night in Ann Arbor. There is no set time for a return, but Miles does know the senior will not be available for Saturday’s game, or next week against Purdue.

Depth has been a problem all season long for Miles and company, but with the loss of Peltz and Ubel, things will get a little bit tighter.

“Mike felt like the pain was just too much and he wasn’t able to be the player he is by only practicing 1/3 of practice,” said Miles, who also spoke about his senior post player. “It sounds worse than it is, but its still bad news, Brandon Ubel got hit on the elbow with about three to four minutes left. What happened was it tried to dislocate, but didn’t, it tried to but it caused a fracture.”

While Miles didn’t say it directly, it is expected that freshmen Shavon Shields and Sergej Vucetic will get considerably more playing time.

Junior shooting guard Ray Gallegos has been expected all season to lead the team when it comes to scoring, and now with one of the leading scorers out, Gallegos knows that he’ll have to take a step up when it comes to shooting the ball, and leadership.

“Other people are going to have to step up,” said Gallegos. “Obviously I’m a pretty quiet guy, but I have to step out of my comfort zone, and lead them in that way.”

Gallegos is a shy guy, but on the court his confidence is radiant, and he will not shy away from the big moment. Gallegos put it in very simple terms of what he will do.

“If I’m open, I’m going to shoot.”

The Huskers and the Spartans square off at 5:00pm CT on the Big Ten Network Sunday night.
