Quick Hitter: Sam Cotton progressing well

Sam Cotton (Big Red Report)

True freshman tight end Sam Cotton might be asked to grow up in a hurry next season.

LINCOLN, Neb. - After missing out on junior college tight end Beau Sandland on Wednesday, the Huskers will shift their attention elsewhere at the position, hoping to find a player that can be similar to the departing Ben Cotton next season.

But as Big Red Report's Bryan Munson pointed out on Tuesday, maybe that player is already on the roster?

True freshman Sam Cotton, Ben's little brother, has reportedly had a solid year on scout team and is thought to be a player who can maybe make the jump next season.

"I think Sam is going to be a good football player, he's a talented young man who is going to be really good down the line," said Pelini on Thursday morning. "He's developing. He was with the scouts most of the year, but I think he's going to be really good."

Cotton, who is listed at 6-foot-4, 230 pounds, had 23 receptions, including seven touchdown grabs at Lincoln Southeast a year ago.

Pelini also mentioned another Southeast grad turning heads in practice at the tight end position this fall.

"I think Trey Foster (walk-on) is going to be a really good player for us," said Pelini. "He's done really well...I feel pretty good about our young tight ends."

Foster only had seven catches in 2011 during his senior year of high school, but has reportedly transitioned to the position full-time very well.

The Huskers already have one high school tight end committed for the 2013 class in the form of Greg Hart.

Hart reminds analysts more of senior Kyler Reed than Cotton.

Nebraska is still recruiting junior college tight end Brandon Vandenburg (College of the Desert), but will have stiff competition for the Roadrunners' product. Schools like Cal, Arkansas, Cincinnati, Kansas State, Kentucky, Texas A&M, and Vanderbilt have offered.

The 6-foot-6, 260 pound prospect had 24 receptions for 353 yards and three touchdowns this season.
