Malzone Makes Most of Opportunities

Brother Rice (Mich.) sophomore quarterback Alex Malzone is one of the young guns to watch in the state of Michigan.

The class of 2015 is shaping up to be a good one for quarterbacks in Michigan, with several potential highly regarded prospects already emerging.

A number of them took center stage in last weekend's state title games, including Brother Rice's Alex Malzone. Unlike the others, Malzone is not the starter, but made the most of his opportunities, going eight of 11 for 168 yards and two touchdowns in the win over Muskegon.

"It was the most exciting game I've ever played in," he said. "To see all the fans there supporting us, it was great."

The 6'3, 190-lb Malzone went 27 of 35 on the year, 474 yards with seven touchdowns and no interceptions. He played behind senior Cheyne Lacanaria, who was a big help in his increased comfort level as the season went on.

"I was the quarterback on J.V. last year and then got moved up for the playoffs, he explained. "This year, Cheyne was always there to help me. Halfway through the regular season is when I started to get the offense down, and whenever I had a question, he was there. He wouldn't push me to the side. He would help with the defenses and which receivers he looks for, and it helped me a lot."

So far, the college interest has started close to home.

"When Coach Dantonio came to Rice for Jon Reschke, he was talking to our offensive coordinator and he gave him a questionnaire for me. I went to Michigan's camp last summer too."

Malzone says he is no stranger to Ann Arbor.

"I've been going to Michigan games sever since I was little. My dad had season tickets and I've always liked Michigan. Some other schools I watched were Florida and some of the other powerhouses."

This summer, Malzone plans to be much more active on the summer camp circuit, as he will take over as the full time quarterback, and look to put his name fully on the recruiting radar.

"I'm looking to go to Michigan again. I might do the one-day deal. I know I'm thinking about that and Michigan State and that's all I really know. I've heard of some other good camps from my teammates like Wisconsin and West Virginia."
