Copeland Staying Focused

Junior athlete Vayante Copeland is hearing from several but staying focused on his teams goals of winning a state championship. That goal takes shape Saturday night when Dayton (Ohio) Thurgood Marshal takes the field in the first round of the playoffs.

It's been a big year for Vayante Copeland and his Dayton (Ohio) Thurgood Marshall teammates as they finished the regular season with a 9-1 record earning a first round home game in the Division Three (Region 12) playoffs.

For Copeland the season has shown what hard work and paying attention to the little things can do.

"We increased our conditioning and worked hard on and off the field all year," said Copeland. "In the past few weeks we've really picked up the pace hitting more as we're looking to make a statement in the playoffs."

Copeland has seen success in track but knows winning a championship in football would be so much more.

"It's very important to our team and I to win a championship," said Copeland. "I won a state championship in track running the 4x200, but I want to win a championship with more than four people and winning won with the guys I've grown up with would be great and mean a lot since we've worked so hard in the weight room and on the field throughout the year."

As a key component of his team's success Copeland is hearing from several college programs.

"I really like West Virginia," said Copeland. "I also like Indiana, Bowling Green, Akron and Cincinnati has talked with me. I camped at Wisconsin and talked with (assistant) coach (Zach) Azzannni after one of their tough losses. He told me to keep working hard and to keep my grades good and everything will go from there."

This season has seen Copeland line up on both sides of the field which leads one to ask if the 5-foot-11, 180-pound has a preference of what position he plays in college.

"Where the coaches want to play me is fine with me," said Copeland. "I can be very versatile as a running back, receiver or a defensive back."
