IE Quick Take: Cole Luke

Four-star cornerback Cole Luke of Hamilton High (Chandler, Ariz.) has made his verbal pledge to Notre Dame. IrishEyes.com takes a quick look at the newest member of the Irish 2013 recruiting class.

Notre Dame picked up another important piece to its 2013 recruiting class in Hamilton High (Chandler, Ariz.) defensive back Cole Luke.

Luke, a FOXSportsNEXT.com four-star prospect, will bring many positives to the Irish class with his athletic ability and the talent to compete early in his career. This marks the second straight year the Irish have been able to pull one of Arizona's top prospects away from the West Coast.

WHAT TO LIKE

The first thing that stands out when watching film of Luke is his natural football instincts. He shows a feel for pass routes and the routes opposing receivers will take. Add to that his foot quickness, balance, and the ability to plant and release forward and you have the early makings for a top level defender at the college level. Luke can make up ground with a quick burst while showing the ability to make plays on the ball in the air.

WHAT MAY CONCERN YOU

Irish strength coach Paul Longo will need to add bulk to Luke's 6-foot-0, 170-pound frame to prepare him for the rigors of the college game. The other thing to watch with Luke will be his recruitment going forward as he's held offers from many on the West Coast and we do not expect them to back away despite his pledge.

BOTTOM LINE

This was a position of need for the Irish in the class and Luke brings the skill set to play early on special teams with his kick returning skills. All the tools are there for the Irish to have a high level performer in the secondary as Luke is not afraid to engage in contact with receivers at the line of scrimmage or going for the ball. With his straight-line speed, quick feet and ability to open his hips, Luke can play press coverage, man-to-man or use his awareness and range in zone coverage.
