Spartan Digest Take: Demetrius Cooper

Spartan Digest Take: Demetrius Cooper

Michigan State received the long awaited verbal commitment from Illinois defensive end Demetrius Cooper over the weekend. We give our take on one of the newest members of the Spartans recruiting class.

It was no secrete Julian High School (Chicago, Ill.) defensive end Demetrius Cooper favored Michigan State over the past several weeks.

At 6-foot-5, 225-pounds, Cooper earned his scholarship offers the hard way by going to camps and impressing coaches each step along the way.

But what does this mean in the future for the Spartans?

Here is a quick take on Cooper.

WHAT TO LIKE

Spartan Digest watched Cooper at a couple of different events over the past six months and came away impressed at each. Spartan coaches worked with Cooper during the Sound Mind / Sound Body camp in June and soon they made Cooper one of their top targets.

Built with a long lean frame, Cooper does a great job of coming off the edge. While raw in technique, Cooper has the quick twitch fibers you want from a future top pass rusher but needs to physically mature.

WHAT MAY BE A CONCERN

While Cooper did a great job tearing up the camp and combine circuit there are still questions as to how he'll do on the field when the pads are cracking. He was sidelined last season with an injury and some thought me might slip through the cracks when it came to programs showing interest. A solid senior season will erase these fears and we hope to see film soon on how he's progressing.

OVERALL

There was a reason Cooper went from unknown to top prospect in only a matter of weeks. After missing his junior season, Cooper made sure to attend two of the top camps in the Midwest where college coaches were able to attend. It was at these camps he showed his willingness to be coached and his quick rush off the edge. The physical size is there at 6-foot-5, but time is needed in a college strength program to place Cooper on the field at Michigan State.
