Gholston Not Satisfied

Despite a decisive performance against the offense in the first jersey scrimmage of the preseason, William Gholston is not satisfied.

Sounding more like a coach, Michigan State defensive end William Gholston sees the positives from Sunday's jersey scrimmage. However, that does not mean he's satisfied.

The first part of the preseason is now in the books as the Spartans held their first jersey scrimmage of the preseason.

For defensive end William Gholston, things look good, but could be better.

"We've got a lot of competitors on this team," said Gholston. "And overall, the team chemistry is great. Everybody came out and competed hard this afternoon.

While Gholston knows Monday's film study will provide members of the defense a better look at the good and bad, he was not happy with the emotions shown during the team's first full go scrimmage.

"We'll learn a lot more after we watch the film tomorrow," said Gholston. "But we definitely need to play with a lot more energy. We need to play with excitement and enthusiasm. It's also important for the sidelines to come alive. The on-the-field communication has been good; we just need a little more swag."

One thing impressing Gholston early in camp is the depth behind him as Joel Heath and Damon Knox have taken their games to another level.

"It helps a lot when you have guys like that playing behind you, especially in a two-minute situation," explained Gholston. "It's a luxury when you can rotate fresh players like that into the lineup and still pressure the quarterback. Being able to pressure the quarterback is a big key for our defense."

Despite the solid performance Sunday by the defense, Gholston feels it could have been better.

"No, I'm not satisfied with where we're at after 10 practices," said Gholston. "We can always get better. Right now, we're putting in work, so we can get the desired results this season. We're going to strive to improve each practice, as we prepare for the season opener against Boise State."
