Early Look Depth Chart: Quarterback

Kirk Cousins is gone and those outside of Michigan State are ready to knock down the Spartans as Andrew Maxwell takes over the reins. Here is our preseason depth chart look at the quarterback position.

For the past three seasons there have been no questions as to who the leader on and off the field was for Michigan State as quarterback Kirk Cousins was front and center.

Now part of the NFL, Cousins will be missed, but over the past three seasons, he's made it a point to help prepare Andrew Maxwell for his time under center.

Here is a look at the preseason depth chart of Spartan quarterbacks as the team gets ready to officially start the 2012 season on Saturday.

QUARTERBACKS Andrew Maxwell – Connor CookPeter Badovinac

If there is anyone ready to get the 2012 season underway it is sure to be Maxwell. Since the end of the Georgia bowl win, Maxwell has been center stage when people start talking about the 2012 Michigan State season.

After watching Kirk Cousins become a Spartans legend, Maxwell is now poised to take over an offense with some question marks at wide receiver from those on the outside. Maxwell more than anyone knows the talent the Spartans have been building over the years as he's worked with many of his teammates during scout team.

While Spartan fans would have loved to see Maxwell in the Green & White game, coaches seem happy with his overall development from the spring and feel he's ready to set his own standards moving forward.

Cook was given an advance course on being a Spartans quarterback last fall as he traveled with the team and again in the spring when Maxwell went down and missed the spring game. This should play well if Maxwell goes down for any period of time as he showed by the end of spring great improvement and had settled down midway through the spring game giving fans a small look at his talents.

However, the hope is for Maxwell to take as many snaps as he can this fall and become the leader over the next two seasons.

Badovinac is there in case the worse happens or if the Spartans have totally blown out an opponent.

INCOMING FRESHMEN Tyler O'Connor

The freshman should also get a chance to learn like Cook by traveling with the team this fall and going through the day-to-day work leading up to game day. He's got talent and by the spring he should be ready to start battling Cook for the back-up role and his possible future as a starter at Michigan State.
