Maxwell Ready for Challenge

Maxwell Ready for Challenge

It's been three long years for quarterback Andrew Maxwell to finally get his chance to guide Michigan State's offensive attack. Maxwell spoke with the media about his wait and expectations.

Life for Andrew Maxwell has been nice since his arrival on the Michigan State campus. With Kirk Cousins guiding the Spartans to back-to-back 11 win seasons, Maxwell has stayed in the shadows as all eyes focused on Cousins.

However, all that is changing as Maxwell enters spring as the Spartans No.1 quarterback.

How has he prepared for the change?

"I don't know if you can really prepare yourself as much as you need to prepare," said Maxwell. "I don't know if I really know what to expect as I think it's going to be something I'm going to have to take as it comes."

One thing Maxwell stresses is his thankfulness of backing up Cousins and learning during the process instead of making his mistakes in game situations.

"I feel I learned a lot of things sitting behind Kirk that I maybe wouldn't have learned if I would have had to play at places right away," he explained. "I probably would have learned them but it would have been in a game in front of how every many thousands people.

"I made the mistakes in practice; I've watched Kirk and learned from him. I can put all that together and now I'm the guy to use all that experience I've gotten sitting and waiting."

This week's first practice was a little strange as Maxwell explained.

"It was different," he said. "It was weird because for three years when they yelled ones Kirk and the group ran out there. So now that's my group so it was different and is going to take some getting used to but it's a challenge I've been waiting for and a challenge I'm ready to accept."

While there are many questions in the Spartans receiving core, Maxwell feels a couple of guys will be ready.

"I've been working with Tony (Lippett) and Keith (Mumphery)," said Maxwell. "They were with the two's last year so we had all of last spring, last fall to work together so I think the chemistry with those two is at a high right now but spring is a great time.

"We have a lot of new guys especially at the receiver position fighting for spots so a lot of guys were rotating through there and a lot of opportunities to build chemistry there."

Maxwell knows Spartan fans will be watching very closely to his progress this spring to see if he's ready for the challenge of replacing Cousins at the helm of the Spartans offense.
