With hopes of making a long playoff run were high, McGowan and the Elks found a tough opponent in their first round game in Middletown falling 28-10.
How it started to sink in that his high school career is behind him?
"It was tough," said McGowan. "It was really pretty weird to be honest. It started to sink in last Monday when we turned in our equipment that my high school career at Centerville was over."
While McGowan knows he's got a future in college at Michigan State. He says there is also a depressing side to his prep career coming to an end.
"It does make it easier knowing I'll have the chance to play at Michigan State," said McGowan. "However, it's a little depressing knowing some of my friends will not have the same chances to play in college."
Looking back, McGowan is happy he made an early pledge to the Spartans.
"I feel committing earlier really did relieve me of a lot of the stress that goes with recruiting," said McGowan. "Instead of worrying about where I was going or taking visits I was able to keep my focus on the season at hand."
McGowan has been so focused he's yet to make a trip up to East Lansing for a game. However, that is about to change.
"I'm going up this weekend to watch them play Indiana," said McGowan. This will be my first game this season and I'm really excited about getting up there."
While he's not been back on campus, McGowan has been keeping tabs on his future teammates as was watching when the Spartans defeated Iowa.
"They looked good," said McGowan about the Spartans. "They beat Iowa and they are always a tough team to beat and they played well."
Spartan Digest will continue to check in on McGowan until we reach National Signing Day.
