Ekanem Finds Spartans Classy

Back in August, Scout.com four-star defensive end Ken Ekanem cut down the list of college programs he was looking at. Michigan State made the cut and Ekanem explains his interest in the Spartans.

Since taking over the Michigan State football program, Mark Dantonio has looked at recruiting with a low-pressure approach and for good reasons. Recruits and their families love the way Dantonio and his entire staff go about the process.

One player the Spartans have impressed is Clifton (VA) Centreville High School defensive end Ken Ekanem.

"Michigan State is a classy program," said Ekanem. "I really like their coaching style and defensive line coach Ted Gill."

Ekanem, who stands 6-foot-3, 240-pounds, has the ability to play defensive end or outside linebacker in college. Where do the Spartans see him if he would to wear the Green & White?

"Michigan State is recruiting me as a defensive end in their system."

One thing Ekanem has not been able to do is visit campus. Are plans in the works to make a trip officially or unofficially to East Lansing?

"I've never been up to Michigan State," said Ekanem. "I'm hoping to get up there at some time soon but they are so far away. So I'm looking at doing it after my football season. It will all depend upon when my season ends as to when I'll take a visit."

Who is heading up the Spartans recruiting efforts for Ekanem?

"Coach (Ted) Gill," said Ekanem. "Coach (Mike) Tressel and coach Gill have both came to my school to see me in the past."

How important is it for Ekanem to have his future position coach leading the charge?

"It's great to know coach Gill would be my position coach," said Ekanem. "I'm really looking to get familiar with my position coach as that is who I'm going to spend the next four or five years of my life with. So I want to have a good relationship with him prior to coming to the school."

Despite having never visited campus, Ekanem feels he knows enough to keep the Spartans on his list. How much does he really know about the Spartans?

"I know enough," said Ekanem. "As I said before, Michigan State is a very classy program and they are winning."

The Spartans are battling North Carolina State, Notre Dame, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Boston College, Pittsburgh and Oregon at this time for Ekanem.
