Spring Breakdown: Quarterback

Spring Breakdown: Quarterback

As we start breaking down each position, the Spartans get ready to take the field on Tuesday for the first of 15 days of practice. We start with the quarterback position.

The 2011 season is one of promise when you look at the quarterback position.  Kirk Cousins returns for his final season with 25 career starts under his belt.  However, behind Cousins are question marks that need to be answered.

The Michigan State spring depth chart list three quarterbacks and while many will look at Cousins experience, you have to raise a few questions on the overall depth at the position.

During his pre-spring press conference, Spartans head coach Mark Dantonio referenced the fact former quarterback Keith Nichol will take a few snaps at his old position.  To many this should be a sign of weakness at the position overall.

Make no mistake, Andrew Maxwell picked up some great experience last spring and season.  However, he has not been placed in the position of having to carry a team.  This spring is important for Maxwell and the Spartans future as he must take more reps and continue showing the improvement he did a season ago.

Behind the sure two, the depth chart shows Peter Badovinac; nevertheless, any injury to Cousins or Maxwell would look to force a move by the coaching staff of placing Nichol fulltime back to the quarterback position.

This spring must be a strong one for Maxwell more than Cousins as the veteran starter is a known commodity while his understudy must be placed in a position to lead at anytime during the season and into the future.
