Offense shines in scrimmage

Dowdell and Dortch have big days

The Spartans finished their second week of spring practice the same way they did the first -- with a controlled scrimmage. Damon Dowdell and Tyrell Dortch looked good on the first unit offense, and Greg Taplin and Monquiz Wedlow paced the defense.

Dowdell completed nine-of-14 passed for 108 yards and helped set up three scores. Wide receiver Kyle Brown was the recipient of two of Dowdell passes for 56 yards.

Drew Stanton got some time with the first team, connecting on six-of-10 passing for 76 yards. Stanton's go-to man was freshman Jerramy Scott, who caught consecutive passes of 25 and 20 yards, respectively, to set a 3-yard touchdown run by Jeran Hayes.

Hayes finished the day with 3 touchdowns and 36 yards, but it was Dortch who broke off some long runs. Dortch carried the ball 12 times for 90 yards (7.5 yards per carry) to leading the rushing attack.

On the defensive side of the ball, defensive end Greg Taplin logged five tackles and two sacks, and Bandit Monquiz Wedlow had four tackles and and a pick.

The Spartans will have another scrimmage on Saturday.
